Scammers Pretending to be Officers

Sheriff Joey Lemons
Stokes County Sheriff’s Office
The Stokes County Sheriff’s Office has received several reports about citizens being called by someone proclaiming themselves to be a Stokes County deputy. This scam consists of threatening the person on the phone that they have a warrant out for their arrest and they must send money to post the bond. They are getting an officer’s name from the Sheriff’s Office website and using that name to threaten the citizen. When offering to go to the Sheriff’s Office to resolve the issue, they will tell you that you can’t or not to hangup on them. This is similar to the jury duty scam. Law enforcement will not call to solicit money to pay a fine or bond. When in doubt, call your local law enforcement to verify the authenticity of the allegation. Please share this information with your loved ones that may not see this, as these criminals are good at intimidating people.
